This castle, Castello Sant’Aniceto, is set upon a hilltop within the district of Motta San Giovanni in the Reggio Calabria province and dates from the Byzantine era. It is in an isolated position in the hills about 30 minutes from the town of Reggio Calabria, and a perfect vantage point to see the mountains of Sicily. On a clear day you can see over the sea and the peak of Mount Etna volcano, rising above the Strait of Messina.
Walk up the pathway to the entrance of the fortress, with rectangular turrets either side which were built by the Normans when they conquered Southern Italy. The castle is one of the best preserved fortresses originally of the Byzantine era, first built during a time when attacks along the coast from Saracen pirates were common. It was then enlarged by the Normans, and now the irregular plan spreads over the hilltop. You won’t find much literature or guides when you visit, yet it is unlikely that you will find any other visitors either! Explore the castle and various crumbling areas within its thick walls with slightly overgrown areas adding to its charm.
The highest section of the castle has been equipped with a stage and performance facilities. Various musical events are held here in the summer, when the castle is lit up spectacularly at night. Entrance to these events are often free. (We will provide information here once 2016’s events are announced.) Whether you visit the castle during the day or at night, enjoy breathtaking views over towards the coastline of Sicily, with this quiet vantage point rivalling the famous views from Reggio’s lungomare.
